Quickly get started with xAPI.

We understand it can be daunting to understand and build xAPI course content from scratch. But don’t worry, we can help.

See How We xAPI

Our team of professional eLearning developers have dug deep into Articulāte Storyline, Adobe Captivate and Lectora to understand how to best use the power of xAPI in each tool.

Our style template sets come pre-populated with all of the xAPI statements, triggers, and variables that you need to start tracking data immediately. Use our games, scenarios, drag and drops, timelines, and more.

1. Download a Template from Our Library

Choose from 100s of templates that are xAPI-enabled with pre-built features using leading eLearning authoring tools.

2. Edit in Your Favorite Tool

Open the file, enter your course content, and it’s ready for publish. Or, dig into the xAPI statements on the various objects and take your tracking to an even higher level. You don’t have to make any changes if you don’t want to…it will work either way!

3. Publish Your Course

Lastly, use the xAPI tool setting to publish your course and direct it to your Learning Record Store (LRS) of choice. Then, you can start to see your learners’ activity and course data.

What is xAPI?

xAPI is an abbreviation for Experience API. You might also be familiar with it as TinCan, as it was originally dubbed. Its purpose is to give you the power to track your learners’ experiences as minimally or as extensively as you see fit.

How does xAPI work?

At its most basic, xAPI is a specification for communicating with a Learning Record Store (LRS). Don’t have one or know what an LRS is? Don’t even worry about it. We explain more, as well as have a great FREE option!

xAPI allows a course to send human-readable data to track a learning event. It uses JSON (javascript object notation) to send simple statements to an LRS about what actions a learner takes, which we’ve already set up for you in our templates.

Essentially, it sends the statement: “Someone Did Something” in the form of “Actor • Verb • Object.”

Actor being the learner taking the course;

Verb being the action taken (e.g., could be a mouse click or screen tap); and,

Object being the item the action was done to, like a button getting clicked.

What Are the Benefits of Using xAPI?

  • Poll your users—report on and share response data back with them.
  • View user clicks in software simulations/interactions (real-time).
  • Measure content engagement.
  • Identify user interaction trends.
  • Follow a single user throughout a course.
  • Filter and report on each learner activity taken throughout a course with ease.
  • No need for multi-slide interactions with xAPI templates.
  • Host your courses outside an LMS.
  • Send course data to any xAPI-enabled endpoint.
  • Use an LRS to generate custom user/content dashboards (and embed them) with complex graphs on the fly.

Templates built in popular eLearning tools.

We use software you already know and love. That means there’s no need to learn a new tool. Just download our xAPI templates and edit them in Articulāte Storyline, Adobe Captivate, and Lectora.

Learn how to “xAPI.”

We provide source files for every template. This allows you to see exactly how we built everything. We even provide support and “How To” videos; so, dig into each file and learn how to xAPI.

xAPI-ready “out of the box.”

Every template comes ready to start tracking learner data right away. You don’t need to write any code or worry about casting any magic spells. Just use our templates in your course and export to an LRS.

Track exactly what you need.

We’ve set up almost every user interaction in our Style templates with triggers and base xAPI components (this includes the necessary javascript), so you literally don’t have to do anything to start gathering important user interaction data. You can, of course, take tracking to the next level and expand on what’s already included at the core.

Learning Record Store (LRS) Tested.

You need a place to collect, report on, and visualize your learners’ activity data. A Learning Record Store (LRS) does exactly that. There are many LRSs on the market and many ways to make eLearning authoring tools communicate to these LRSs properly. We’ve tested our templates in many of the leading LRSs—such as Veracity LRS and SCORM Cloud—to ensure that data is passing and displaying correctly.
