Several years ago, it may have been enough to create eLearning that involved screens with forward and back buttons, some cute graphics and a quiz at the end. It didn’t require much to impress learners.
Thanks to the amazing technology available at our fingertips, today’s learners are a much more discerning crowd. It takes more than the forward and back button to engage them. In fact, today’s learners get bored fairly quickly.
There are three ways eLearning games can make sure your learners aren’t bored to tears by the end of a training experience. eLearning games prevent boredom by:
Engaging learners. Whether it’s the thrill of competition or a desire to have fun, we haven’t met too many learners who are going to walk away from the opportunity to “play a game”.
Reinforcing key concepts. Most of us can’t commit something to memory immediately. But if you simply repeat what you’ve already said, learners are going to tune out. Games are a tool you can use to artfully reinforce key concepts that learners will need to be able to recall when the training is over. (They’ll thank you later.)
Allowing learners to practice, fail, succeed and gain confidence. Learning any new skill – a sport, an instrument, even a new on the job task – involves practice. An eLearning game provides learners with a place to practice a new skill without serious repercussions if they fail or make a mistake. The option to fail in a safe environment produces learners who are more willing to practice what they’ve learned. Eventually this practice leads to success, which builds confidence and ultimately ensures an experience the learner can recreate in order to positively contribute to the bottom line through elevated performance.
