The PowerPoint import feature of Lectora is a great way to quickly block in text and images, especially if PowerPoint is already part of your workflow. Just keep in mind these points to maximize the benefits and minimize any issues.

To start, under the “Tools” tab select “From PowerPoint” in the “Import” section. This will give you a standard file browser window to select your target PPT. Once selected, a slide selection box will open. There is no “select all” but holding the shift key while selecting the first and last slide will select all in between.

Clicking “Next” will open an import options box. Here you can set the size of the imported slides, as well as any transition mapping and image format. Transitions can be problematic, so if you are having issues with import, select the “no transitions” option. Selecting “PNG” for the images will maintain any transparency in the source images.

Click “Finish” to import the slides. Notice the imported slides have the title given them in the PPT. Keep this in mind to minimize changes in the AWT.

As an example, the “Knowledge Check” page shows that the import makes a separate object for each text box and image, so if you want a consistent layout, including font selection, be sure to set up the PPT that way. Another consideration is that while actions such as next and back are imported, they will be attached to an image rather than a button. This brings up the final point. To maximize the import, place all shared resources such as title bars, footers and navigation buttons only in the PPT’s Master Slides, or they will be repeated on every page. Or you may want to create these in the AWT as top level items that are inherited on each page as required.

A clean, well set up PPT can make a clean, imported AWT and give you a good head start on your course production!
