eLearning Goals 2017

There are only three months left in 2016, so it’s time to look at your professional eLearning goals and what you want to achieve in 2017. Many people in the corporate and educational worlds embrace the SMART Goal methodology— because it works. If you want to set goals that you’re likely to achieve in 2017, make sure they are SMART:

  • Specific: To achieve a goal, you need to have a clear target that will inspire you to make progress.
  • Measurable: It’s important to have a way to calculate and determine the progress you make.
  • Agreed-upon: If your goal includes other people, or requires others’ support to achieve the goal, make sure you’ve agreed upon the goal before you attempt to complete it.
  • Realistic: Goals should require effort, but attaining them needs to be within reach rather than impossible.
  • Time-based: Find the balance between having enough time to complete your goal, but not too much time that it’s easy to get distracted.

What SMART goals are related to your career in eLearning design? Here are some ideas you can use to craft your goals for 2017:

  1. Identify three ways to make your day more manageable and use those techniques for at least 21 days.
  2. Communicate more effectively with subject matter experts (SME) by creating one new SME relationship every quarter in 2017.
  3. Identify if you want to earn a promotion or ask for a raise, then find two ways you can get ready to do just that.
  4. Sign up for one course that will help you learn a new skill.
  5. Review industry recognition options; submit an application for an award by December 31, 2017.
  6. Choose a new way to organize your design process and use it for your next project.
  7. Find a mentor or mentee and meet with that person once a month for six months.
  8. Find an intake process that will help streamline content development, review it with the team, and put it in place by a specific date.
  9. Confirm that you want to use technology to collaborate with others; look for a solution that meets identified needs, test the option, roll it out to team members within six months.
  10. Get opportunities for more responsibility by asking your manager for new projects during monthly one-on-one meetings.

Most importantly, don’t overwhelm yourself by setting ten goals to achieve in 2017. Start by picking three goals you want to achieve before December 31, 2016. Measure and celebrate your success. If you meet a goal before the deadline, add a new one to your list for 2017. With a systematic, SMART approach, it’s likely you’ll achieve more goals than you ever thought possible—and you’ll certainly make more progress than if you leave it all to chance.
