A thought leader and sought-after expert on the application of cognitive science research to learning and performance, he has over 30 years of experience. Virtual reality is rapidly gaining acceptance as an exciting technology for learning. But once we get beyond the hype, we need to ask: Can learning in a virtual world really transfer to the real world?

In this session, you’ll examine an early virtual reality platform that enabled hospital staff to prepare for a move to a new hospital building. You’ll delve into the design of an experimental study that carefully controlled for confounding variables to determine the effectiveness of the hospital’s investment in building the virtual hospital. You’ll explore lessons learned from creating the virtual hospital and guidelines for measuring the actual effectiveness and outcomes, and you’ll learn how to get beyond the VR hype by gathering valid evidence.

  • How VR can be used to simulate an environment that cannot be entered in the real world

Becoming a Learning Experience Designer

“Instructional design” is too limited now as it deals with “instruction,” which is only a small part of the learning process. It’s time to think differently about how to design learning programs that integrate formal, informal, and on-the-job learning. Learning experience design (LXD) is a method of facilitating skill development by providing learners with a systematic set of experiences supported by content, feedback mechanisms, and technology.

In this workshop, you’ll begin the process of transitioning from instructional designer to learning experience designer. You’ll see how to leverage technology, especially mobile and the Experience API (xAPI), to deliver, capture, and track learning experiences. You’ll see examples of LXD in action. You’ll get to practice applying the six-step learning experience design process to your own projects. You’ll leave with a set of research-based guidelines for designing, structuring, and sequencing experiences into optimized learning paths.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to design effective learning experiences
  • How to employ learning technology ecosystems to implement and track learning experiences
  • How to apply parent disciplines (like cognitive science, user experience design, information design, and design thinking) to learning design
  • How to create and sequence a systematic set of learning experiences that lead to improved job performance
  • How to encourage the organizational and cultural changes needed to make learning experience design work
  • How to use technology to measure the effectiveness of learning experiences
