Continuing our exploration of pre-made custom eLearning courses for the Bridge LMS, today we’re taking a look at “Goal Setting and Achieving,” a crash course in effective goals, personal organization, and time management.

If you’re an adult with a career, chances are that you have a to-do list, whether it’s written down or not. Nearly every day, stuff is added to that list, and every day you do your best to chisel away at that list. The key is making sure that you accomplish the stuff on your list faster than the list itself grows.

But that’s exactly where a lot of people get tripped up when trying to be more productive. Whether they fail to set a timetable, make unreasonable expectations, or get caught up multitasking, they find themselves being less effective than they want to be.

All of those problems, and more, can be mitigated by goal-setting. Too often people treat goals the way they might treat an ill-conceived New Year’s Resolution: like a “nice thing” they hope will happen in the future, which isn’t given the requisite effort or forethought it truly requires.

As this course points out, people should set S.M.A.R.T. goals:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Timely

Another common pitfall of those trying to better themselves is the fallacy that a structured life with routine and regular tasks will equal a life of boredom an monotony, when this couldn’t be further from the truth. Though the idea of knowing exactly what you need to do today might seem boring and predictable to certain adventurous personalities, it actually frees you up to do more with your free time.

In reality, a well-made schedule is akin to the upkeep and healthy habits that keep your body functioning properly. If all you ate was chocolate and you never left the couch, it would be fun for a few hours. But left unchecked, your overall health would spiral out of control, doing unthinkable damage to your body over time.  Similarly, if you don’t set goals or manage you’re time, you might have the temporary feeling of devil-may-care nonchalance, but your to-do list is bound to grow at an alarming rate, overwhelming your brain and crushing your will under the weight of the things you’ll never get done.
