When I was growing up there was a television show that talked about the initial horror (but subsequent elation) at combining two disparate but delicious flavors together. The result was an even more wonderful confection that proved that two tastes—both great alone—can also be great together.

So have you heard about the new styles in the eLearning Brothers template library? You have? Oh yeah, that’s right, we wrote a blog about that here. But how about this…have you heard about Pantone’s awesome new color of the year?

Pantone says that Ultra Violet is “dramatically provocative and thoughtful” and “communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future”.

Well, just like that commercial from my childhood, you can combine these two great things and make an even more awesome thing!

I’m going to show you how to convert one of our new Shamrock style templates to the new Pantone Color of the year in just a few easy steps.

The template I’m choosing is the Shamrock Style Ripple Scenario—available for Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, and Lectora by Trivantis.

For Storyline
  • Download the template and the Graphic Source files (fonts).
  • Open the template in Storyline.
  • You’ll see that there are four slides in the package. Select them all then click Import. (Leaving the default of Current Scene is fine for now.)
  • Storyline opens in Story View. Double-click the first slide to open to slide view.

  • From the timeline expand the Circle 5+Label group and select Circle 5.

  • From the toolbar select Format>Shape Fill>More Fill Colors…

  • Enter the HTML code for the Color of the Year (5F4B8B) and click OK.
  • Switch back to the Home tab (keep the circle selected).
  • From the far left in the Clipboard panel on the ribbon, double-click the Format Painter.

  • With the Format Painter selected, click each of the other two circles that are colored (don’t click the white circles).

  • Go to each of the layers corresponding to the circles you just colored (in this case that would be layers 1, 3, & 5) and click on the large circle with the format painter.

For a real course, you might prefer to change the font to white so it shows up better, but we’re just focusing on changing the shape color for this blog.

  • Switch to the other 3 slides (Format painter should still be active) and click on the colored circles to transform them.
  • Optional: You might choose to change the down state of the circles as well. I’ll leave that up to you.

BOOM! That quickly, you’ve transformed the Shamrock template with the Pantone Color of the Year in Storyline.

For Captivate 2017:
  • Download the template and the Graphic Source files (fonts).
  • Open the template in Captivate 2017. (As with Storyline, there are 4 slides in the package, but we’ll just focus on the first one.)
  • On the timeline, select ripple1_

  • From the Properties Inspector, Style panel, select Fill, then choose the Color Picker icon.

  • Enter the Color of the Year HTML code (5F4B8B), then click OK.

  • From the Property Inspector, in the Style Name section select the menu button (far right).

  • Select Save changes to Existing Style and watch the magic happen. (It may take a few minutes to propagate the changes through all four slides). It will also change the circle_shape_ element in the circle_feedback_group_  that appears when the ripple circles are clicked.
  • Preview the project to see the changes.
  • Optional, you could also make the state and font changes mentioned above.

KAPOW!! That quickly and easily you’ve made the Captivate project sparkle with Ultra Violet goodness!

For Lectora Inspire 17 (concepts would be similar for Lectora Online):
  • Download the file from the eLearning Brothers Template Library.
  • Open Lectora Inspire 17.
  • From your downloads folder in Windows Explorer, drag the file (Shamrock-Style-Ripple-Scenario-Lectora-Lectora-17-Library-Object-9369682.awo) into your open Lectora project. (There are four pages included. We’ll focus on the first—Shamrock Ripple Scenario – 5 Circles).
  • From your Title Explorer, expand the 5 Circles page group, then expand the Button 5 Group.

  • From the Button 5 Group, select Button 5 Normal.
  • From the menu bar, select Shape>Style.

  • Select Fill Style>Custom…, then select the Custom Tab.

  • Enter the following:
    • Red=95
    • Green=75
    • Blue=139
  • Click Add to Saved Colors, then click OK.
  • Repeat steps 5-9 for Buttons 3 and 1.
  • Expand Button 5 Content and select Ellipse.

  • Change the color of the ellipse by selecting the Style Menu>Fill Style, and then choosing the color from the Saved Colors.

  • Repeat steps 11 & 12 for Button 3 Content and Button 1 Content (in those groups the object is named Circle BG rather than Ellipse).
  • As with the other tools, you can also change the font if you desire better readability on the Ultra Violet background.
  • Preview your changes.

VOILA!!! In just a few short steps you’ve brought Visionary Thinking to your Lectora project.

That’s it. It’s pretty simple really. eLearning Brothers and Pantone’s Color of the Year, Ultra Violet…two great things that go great together. Now you can start converting all your projects to dramatically provocative and thoughtful projects. Download a template from the library and get colorizing!
