Sean Bott is a comedy mentalist. If you’re not quite sure what the means, don’t worry, I didn’t know either. When he got on stage at eLBX 2018, I wasn’t sure what to expect. What followed was a hilarious presentation that challenged preconceived notions and wowed the crowd.
One of the key concepts Sean illustrated was actually right in line with what our improv performance demonstrated—the concept of “yes, and” when brainstorming. It’s a brainstorming approach (that you could really apply to your whole life if you’re feeling daring!) that encourages freedom and discourages you from saying “no” to any idea presented.
He also talked about the power of storytelling, a concept we in the eLearning are big fans of, and the importance of play. However, he didn’t just stand in front of a PowerPoint presentation and tell us that storytelling is important. He showed it through actual storytelling and activities that sparked amazing mental connections between audience members. He also took his shoe off at one point and balanced on Dr. Karl Kapp’s shoulder, but you’ll have to watch the video to understand that one.
Probably one of my favorite quotes from Sean’s performance was his usage of “kitten paws” instead of hands when asking for applause for his brave audience volunteers.
We hope you enjoyed this video! View Sean’s presentation slides here.
