One of the biggest dividing lines throughout history has been generational differences. Due to differences in how they were raised and a myriad of shared experiences, there will always be a tendency toward disconnect between the old and the young.

As the immortal George Orwell said, “Each generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it and wiser than the one that comes after it.”

But with those differences also comes the opportunity to share fresh ideas and perspectives with our older and younger counterparts.

One of our new custom courses for the Bridge LMS is titled “Generational Awareness,” and it can give you a leg up when it comes to leading or working with an age-diverse team. Here’s some of what it covers.

The first part of understanding generational issues is to define your terms. Though it’s tricky to apply a blanket definition to everyone within a certain age group—people are individuals, of course—there are many characteristics that often apply to people in the same cohort that are less prevalent with others.

Going back to the 1920s, here are the last four generations:

Due to the inevitable march of time, the demographics of the workplace are shifting, just as they always have. Currently, Millennials and Gen Xers are lead in numbers, with 68% of the workforce split evenly between the two of them. Closely following, are the Baby Boomers at 29%. A great many of the surviving Traditionalists have retired at this point, with only 2% of the workforce representing their cohort. Finally, the uncategorized new generation, referred to here as “Post-Millennials” are just now coming of age, so they only make up a scant 1% of the current workforce.
