Best Practices for Effective Soft Skills Training

Boring soft skills training doesn’t just put employees to sleep. It lowers employee perception of your organization – your internal brand. That’s why the most effective soft skills training typically doesn’t just fly off someone else’s shelf.

Savvy organizations take time to customize soft skills training so that it not only addresses their desired learning objectives, but does it with highly targeted, interactive courses that look and feel professional, and make good use of employee time.

How do they do it? Here are a few best practices I’ve collected over the past couple decades leading award-winning, custom developed training programs. Use these ideas for customizing your own internal soft skills training.

Make it personal

Update the course graphics and voice of the copy to feature your internal culture and brand. For very best results, be authentic but don’t be afraid to be aspirational. That is, show your people what’s possible.

Make it relevant

Every industry has its own unique terms and acronyms. Use your soft skills courses as an opportunity to introduce them. Customize course scenarios with realistic workplace situations and characters that look like your workforce.

Make it Blended

Offer a mix of self-paced eLearning and facilitated Instructor-Led Training (ILT), on-site or delivered via virtual classroom. Offer the type of training best suited to the logistics and cultural norms of your business and region.

Each one teach one

For greatest impact, coach your internal leaders on how to develop soft skills in others. Hold internal Train-The-Trainer (TTT) sessions with seasoned managers and ask them to participate in delivering soft skills sessions to their direct reports.

Keep it timely

In times of great change, when stress levels are high, internal problems tend to bubble up to the surface. By the time a class or workshop is available, the damage may already be done. Be proactive; have targeted training ready to deploy at the moment of need.

Integrate with work

As part of ongoing training, encourage stretch assignments with on-the-job practice and feedback from managers and peers.

Keep it current

It’s hard to get the attention of employees outside of the classroom. Keep your training updated with your most current policies, procedures, links, contacts so they have everything in one place during and after the training session.
