Every year in December, Pantone picks a “color of the year” for the coming year. Who is Pantone and why do they get to decide? Well, in 1963, Pantone helped the printing industry standardize colors with the PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM®, a tool allowing for the faithful selection, articulation and reproduction of consistent, accurate color anywhere in the world. The tool organizes color standards through a proprietary numbering system and chip format. Because of this, we’re able to have consistency in branding and more! Since then, they’ve expanded their reach from printing and design to lifestyle products, color consulting, and more.
For the past 20 years, Pantone has picked a “color of the year” based on fashion, decorating, design and cultural trends, as well as “how colors can embody our collective experience and reflect what is taking place in our global culture at a moment in time,” according to press release from Pantone.
With no further ado… the 2019 color of the year is…

I won’t lie, my first reaction to this announcement was “ugh.” But let’s give Pantone a chance to explain themselves.
According to them, “Living Coral embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment.”
I do like warmth and nourishment…
The Pantone website also says, “In reaction to the onslaught of digital technology and social media increasingly embedding into daily life, we are seeking authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy.”
Authentic and immersive experiences, eh? Pretty much what every eLearning developer and instructional designer is trying to achieve, right?! So maybe Living Coral isn’t so bad after all.
I think I’m having trouble embracing Living Coral because I don’t want to let go of last year’s Pantone Color of the Year—Ultra Violet. (Purple is my favorite color.)
Last year, we blogged about how to change the colors in our eLearning templates to Ultra Violet.
Check out the tutorial for each major authoring tool—Adobe Captivate, Articulate Storyline, and Lectora—on this page: Electrify Our Templates With Pantone’s Color of the Year.
You can apply the same strategy to bestow your 2019 training modules with the warmth of Living Coral.
After all, it just might give your learners a positive attitude about taking your online training!
Plus, every other retailer out there is releasing products in 2019’s color of the year. We wouldn’t want our learners to be left out of the fun!
Pantone has created a few different sample palettes for designers to use as starting points.
Here are two palettes from the Pantone website that would be nice color schemes for corporate training.
Another way to incorporate the color of the year is through stock photos.
In the eLearning Brothers Stock Asset Library, we have a wide variety of photos that you can add to your eLearning content to give it the warmth of Living Coral. Here are a few examples:
