Learning is a process, and like any process, it sometimes takes a significant time investment to complete. But time is a precious resource, and should be spent wisely. One benefit to shortening the amount of time you spend learning a certain concept is that it increases the amount of things you can potentially absorb from your studies.

There are many things you can do to accelerate the learning process and get more bang for your buck in eLearning situations. If you need to speed the process for your learners, try some of these tips on for size.

Plan ahead

While it pays to have personal study plan, you as an instructional designer can accomplish this on the scale of your entire pool of learners by meticulously planning a curriculum for them to follow. Look at all of your material and decide which topics need more time and which can be taught in shorter amount of time. Be sure to give each subject the time it needs and deserves without overstaying its welcome.

Optimum Learning Environment

As a teen, you probably learned that it was difficult to finish your math homework if you were sitting on the couch, stealing glances at the television between equations. This environment can be intensely distracting for a variety of reasons. Our posture when on a couch usually doesn’t communicate to the brain, “I’m ready to learn,” as much as it does, “I’m ready to relax.” Furthermore, the added distraction of a television takes your focus away from the assignment where it’s sorely needed. All these distractions lengthen the amount of time it takes to learn. If you have any control over the environment where your learners will be trained, make sure it is free of needless distractions and conducive to deep thinking.

Multiple methods

We learn in a lot of different ways, and each method stimulates the brain in its own style. The more ways you can stimulate your learners’ brains, the more pathways it will draw in their brains, and the more memorable the material will be.

Regular knowledge checks

Allow your learners to apply their newfound knowledge with regular quizzes and assignments to really forge a quick connection in the brain. This will also serve the dual purpose of creating a better and quicker response in the learner as well as giving the instructor an update on how the learner is doing.

Give your learners something in return for completing each phase of the learning process. This can be as simple as a small eLearning game to break things up, badges and certifications, or even a short, but relevant, diversion.
