In honor of May the Fourth, we sat down and watched all the Star Wars we could sit through. During that potato chip fueled marathon, it dawned on us that many of the characters in this classic series have some great perspectives on eLearning.

“Size matters not.”

A course doesn’t have to be an hour long if you don’t have an hour of material to fill it.

“I thought these things smelled bad on the outside!”

If a course stinks from the get-go, it’s probably a good indicator that the innards aren’t exactly potpourri. Discerning learners are definitely going to pick up on this, so don’t just take a bunch of bad ideas, throw them together, and hope they cancel each other out.

“The ability to speak does not make you intelligent.”

Just because you have an authoring tool, that doesn’t mean you know how to make good eLearning. It’s difficult to learn when you’re too busy laughing at the teacher.

“I love you.”

“I know.”

Don’t insult a learner’s intelligence by spelling out every little thing like they’re an infant. Assume a base level of knowledge depending on the subject, and only spoon-feed when absolutely necessary.

“I feel like a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.”

Find a voice actor with a good voice. The quality and tonality of a narrator can make or break a course. If reasonable, match the course to a voice that is appropriate for the tone of the material. No one wants to be taking a course about a rather somber subject matter, and suddenly hear a radio shock-jock voice start hooting and hollering.

“It’s a trap!”

Be clear about your course objectives. Don’t say that your course covers a certain topic when it is barely touched on, or leave out a prominent subject when describing the objectives.
