Video Production Tips: Slate, Mic, and Lighting

When shooting a live action video, you suddenly have to care about different things than you do in a screencast. You are likely to be dealing with more “takes” or attempts at your recording. You have to figure out how to get quality sound when you are mobile, and you have to figure out what your subject is going to look like.

To help you organize your video catalog in your video editor of choice, filmmakers of old developed a tool called the Slate, sometimes referred to as the Clapboard.

Microphone use is a little bit different from what you would use in a screencast, and you have a wide variety of options. Do you want to put your microphone on the end of a stick and hold it over your subject? Or do you want to tie it to their shirt and have a radio attached to their hip?

Lighting a subject is very different from a screencast. Not everything will be backlit with properly colored lighting anymore. How many lights do you typically need? What color are your lights?
