People who manage their time effectively are productivity ninjas. They know themselves, and they pay attention to how much time their typical work tasks take. Having this kind of streamlined efficiency in a person is awesome, but to have it on an organizational level is extraordinary.

It goes without saying, good time management skills will allow you to get more done with the time that you have. As much as we might yearn for extra hours in the day to get things done, the cold hard truth is that we’re all given the same amount of time. It’s how we use it and manage it that determines how much we get done with it.

The inevitable march forward of time is unstoppable, and once a moment is gone, we can never get it back. As the wise philosophers in the Steve Miller Band put it, “Time keeps on slippin’, slippin’, slippin’…” But if we pay closer attention to that time, we can plan ahead and use that time like we’re meant to use it instead of sitting back and letting it wash over us.

You might think that time management means you need to spend extra time working and setting aside valuable to time to… manage your time. Prioritize

Say it’s Saturday and you have five things you need to get done today. In no particular order:

  • Write a letter to Grandma
  • Call your doctor about that scary-looking mole
  • Water your pet cactus
  • Meet with Dave about the business contract
  • Remove the hornet’s nest on your front porch

They all have to get done, but it’s up to you to weigh what you value most and what needs your attention at this time. Given the list above, what needs to happen first, and which area of your life needs the most care? Your family relationships? Your health? Your hobbies? How you make your living? Or your home?

Plan

Once you have your priorities in order, it makes it easier to schedule your day and create a plan of attack. Be aware and honest with yourself about how long each task is going to take and how much stamina you will have to get them done. Be sure to schedule some breaks throughout so you can stay productive and not force hard work when your body or mind isn’t up to it.

Prevent procrastination

This is where it really comes down to knowing yourself. What situations lead to you procrastinating? What activities throw you off track? Do you have a habit of multitasking? You’re an adult now, so there’s no one to discipline you or force you to “do your homework” or whatever it is you need to get done. It’s up to you to understand that writing a 10-page report for work isn’t conducive to watching TV at the same time. Make peace with the fact that you need to do some work right now and get it done, then reward yourself.
