I always took notes when going through school. There was something about writing on paper that helped me remember things. In fact during a test I could visualize where on my notes a particular topic was written.
Should our eLearning participants take notes?
Yes! Shelley Gable (“How Can Note Taking Help You with Online Learning?“) has a great article on this topic. She focuses on how taking notes can help a learner remember more. She also covers some note taking methods and what should be included in your notes.

Thanks for referencing the note taking article! The original article was intended to encourage learners to take notes…but it’s an interesting question to ponder from an instructional design perspective too.
I know of an organization that is moving toward paper-free training. As part of that effort, they specifically don’t allow their learners to take notes. It seems like a missed opportunity to reinforce learning…although I’ve heard that they’re now thinking about allowing learners to take notes electronically. But for now, their stance is no notes – paper or electronic – period.
