As I said in my last post, earlier this summer I attended the Society of Human Resource Management’s (SHRM) annual conference where 15,000 HR professionals gathered to share best practices, learn new skills, and improve the HR profession.

The experience served as a good reminder that professional development is important for all of us, especially if we’re responsible for creating content used to develop other employees. But many of us don’t pursue professional development opportunities because we don’t have an unlimited budget.

Thanks to social media there are ways you can continue to develop your skills for free! The first platform we covered was Twitter. In this post, I’ll share the opportunities to learn and develop your skills by using LinkedIn.

The discussions and resources on LinkedIn provide the eLearning community with resources, a network, and encouragement.

Groups to join

There are numerous eLearning groups on LinkedIn. Deciding which group to join takes some digging and observation. Are there relevant discussions? Do you gather insights you wouldn’t find elsewhere? Based on your individual situation, find groups that inspire you to develop your own abilities as an eLearning designer.

Organizations to follow

Organizations regularly post content from industry thought leaders about innovative practices in eLearning. Follow them on LinkedIn and when these organizations post information, it will appear in your LinkedIn news feed. Or, dedicate a few minutes each day or an hour a week to visit the organizations you follow so that you review the relevant information they’ve shared.

Share what you read

Part of professional development involves sharing what you learn. If you find a resource thanks to one of the groups you join, or an article you read on LinkedIn benefits your work, be sure to share an update on your LinkedIn profile. Include some thoughts about what you learned and post a link. Your professional network will thank you.

A strategic use of LinkedIn can provide you with development opportunities and will facilitate your connections with fellow eLearning designers around the globe.
