Business Challenge

Acumen Learning’s training traditionally consisted of a three to five day flagship course for anyone who would like to increase their business acumen. Although, this flagship course was very successful in attracting business professionals, Acumen Learning wanted to find a way to increase their revenue by expanding their reach within the country and potentially to a global audience. This expansion encompassed the need for an e-learning course that acted as both a primer and a refresher to the flagship course. Additionally, there was a need to market this course to those who those who were not aware of such a solution to their professional and/or business needs.

Solution

Together with the expertise of instructional designers, developers, project managers, and directors, eLearning Brothers was able to provide the optimal e-learning solution for Acumen Learning. Not only did the eLearning Brothers satisfy Acumen Learning’s business need, but they did it in a way that was interactive, and visually appealing for their audiences.

The following three-fold solution to Acumen Learning’s business needs are described below:

Primer
This standalone e-learning course provided users with a sneak preview of what to expect from the flagship course. In addition to core business principles taught throughout this course, an interactive simulation in conjunction with relevant scenarios was also used in the process to allow the user to demonstrate their knowledge of best practices in business.

Refresher
The e-learning course provided a great avenue for users to apply what they have learned in the flagship course. Through business principles made to life in interactive scenarios, auto-graded quizzes, and a variety of navigation options at the start of the course, professionals are able to obtain only what they need to supplement and apply the knowledge they gained from the flagship course. For example, if a client simply needed a refresher on balance sheets, cash flow statements, and other basic financial principles, Acumen Learning may consider giving this client access to the short video vignettes on these topics.

Marketing Tool
The e-learning course met the need for Acumen Learning’s strategy to reach out to business leaders outside of their client base. Much like clients who need an online refresher course, potential clients are able to choose what aspects of the course would best fit their personal or business learning needs through negotiations with Acumen Learning.

Audience

Business professionals who want to increase their knowledge and/or understanding of business acumen.

Design

The design structure of the full e-learning course encompasses the following:

Introduction:
Not only explains how the user is to navigate around the course, but it introduces each topic before delving more in depth.

Navigation:
The horizontal navigation bar includes a menu, tools, and resources option for the user to choose where they wish to go in the course. With these options, the user is able to better fulfill their learning needs whether it be through worksheets, specific videos, specific sections to the course, etc.

Content:
The two sections of the course includes the following: five business drivers to make companies money and the financial statements that aid companies in these drivers. Each section is filled with business principles, video vignettes from the CEO, and scenarios from a fictitious business. These scenarios allow the user to interact with practical business challenges that they may encounter with their own company.

Activities:
The online course is filled with interactive activities where the user assists the fictitious business owner with hypothetical business scenarios. For example, after instructing on the topic of assets, the course may have the business owner seek advice from the course user to help him figure out a specific problem he is having with his company. The user may then complete an activity where he or she would drag specific items to a location to help to solve the problem. In this course, the user will also have the opportunity to develop their own action plan that integrates the business principles they just learned.

Auto-graded Assessments:
At the end of each section in the course, the user sees a dashboard to view their progress within the course and how they did accumulatively on the interactive activities or quizes they took within the section they just completed. Additionally, the course notifies the user based on their score if they need additional improvement.
